For many musicians, the journey begins with a spark of curiosity. For Élie Chéron, that spark grew into a lifelong passion that has taken him from the rehearsal room to the concert stage, performing with bands including HamaSaari and Ton Zinc while continuing to explore new musical opportunities.  In this exclusive Coffee Time News interview, Élie reflects on his early years behind the drum kit, the teachers and musicians who inspired him, and the dedication required to turn a love of music into a career. Along the way, he shares his thoughts on practice, perseverance, creativity, and the importance of remaining true to yourself as both a musician and a person.  Readers will also discover the music that has influenced Élie throughout his career, enjoy performances from his own bands, and learn why he believes that musical ability is developed through commitment and hard work rather than natural talent alone.

Join us as we get to know Élie Chéron—a drummer whose passion for music continues to shape every beat of his remarkable journey.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  Outside of rock, do you like other styles of music, for instance, jazz?  Are there any jazz drummer you know of and like?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  Yeah!  I don’t like only rock or metal music.  Sometimes I listen to jazz or traditional music, pop music too, I mean I think the only kind of music that I listen to less is classical musical or rap.  If the music is good, I can listen to anything.  There are a lot of drummers on this planet who are impressive, but one who inspires is Marco Minnemann and he is great!

Se a música for boa, consigo ouvir qualquer estilo.

YURI SUNDERMEYER: Many consider drummers to be the foundation of the band.  Do you view yourself that way?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  I don’t think so, I think in HamaSaari that Jordan is the guy who keeps us moving, I mean even in composing the music, because I can only play drums, if I was composing the songs it wouldn’t be that great, so I think in HamaSaari I’m just the guy trying to put drums that sound good, but I’m not the guy running the band.

Élie Chéron is the drummer for HamaSaari, an emerging band from Le Mans, France. Their latest album, featuring the track "Frames," has been warmly received by fans and showcases the band's distinctive blend of musical creativity and energy.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  Are you involved in any side projects you would like to mention?  Have you provided drum tracks to songs that may not have gotten the attention they deserve?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  Yes, we have side projects… Jordan and I.  One is called Could Seed, which is post-rock music.  I have another side project called Ton Zinc… traditional French music and another side project called Leather Wings… glam rock music and that’s all for my side projects.

O Jordan e eu temos alguns projetos paralelos.

MARIA RITA SILVA:  How would you describe your mindset as you play live?

ÉLIE CHÉRON: Just having fun, sometimes I feel stressed, because the venue might not be all that great, and I can’t hear anything, so I have the stress of worrying about playing the right thing at the right time, and I’m not sure I am, because I can’t hear anything.  But, usually, the mindset is having fun with my friend, and watching the audience enjoying the music that makes me happy.

ÉLIE CHÉRON: Divertir-me.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  Do you enjoy doing drum fills?   Do you like to have a lot of autonomy when you play live with the band?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  Drum fills… it’s really nice to do drum fills, but if you do drum fills every ten seconds… it’s like “blah, blah, blah”, and I don’t really like that.  What I like is when the drums follow the music and a goal of the drums is to be as musical as possible, not just technical, at least that’s the way I play the drums.  When I play, I try to save my energy and not make a lot  of big gestures with my arms, because I need to play for an hour and a half, and I’m pretty lazy.

almente me faz feliz.

MARIA RITA SILVA:  How much time do you put into practicing your instrument?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  Very good question and I think the good answer is not enough.   Right now  I’m not practicing at all and that’s a problem because I know I need to practice, but there are a lot of things to do for now.  Practicing at home, I don’t do very often, but I think in a few years when my own house is ready and my drums are there I will practice again.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  When you were a younger drummer, who were the drummers you most looked up to?  Did you have any early mentors you would like to mention?

ÉLIE CHÉRON: :   When I was young, I would say Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree.  I remember my drum teacher showing me a video from a drumming festival, and there was Chad Smith in it.  Yeah, Chad Smith when I was younger was really a great inspiration.  Now, I would say Marco Minnemann, or Eric Moore, but I think Marco Minnemann, at least for me is one of the best inspirations around.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  What is easier for you, playing at a fast pace and letting loose, or playing softly and with more soul?  How do you keep yourself from doing too much on softer songs?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  For me, when you play soft, it’s very hard because you have to keep that dynamic of being strong with the snare and really soft, so when you’re already playing quietly and softly, it’s very, very hard to keep the same precision.  Playing hard is simpler for me, but it’s more physical.  Although, my mindset is to be between those two options.  We have been playing in smaller venues, so if I play too strong, people will only hear drums and that is bad, because drums, when they are alone or too strong… that’s not good for the fans.

MARIA RITA SILVA:  How good are you at reading music?  Do you feel that is an essential skill for a drummer?

ÉLIE CHÉRON::  When I was younger, I could read music quite easily, but I haven’t had to read sheet music for many years now.  So, I think now if I would need to read something, I would just cry.  It is really important to read music for some people, and reading music is nice, because you have a detailed view of everything.  It’s also important to play music without sheet music.  I mean, sometimes you have the guitarist that is asking you to play “tung-ta, tung-ta” and if you need somebody to write it before you play it, it’s not very efficient.  You need to be able to listen and repeat for somebody who is suggesting something at the moment. And sometimes it can also be useful to write just to have it noted.  But for me, everything is in my brain, because reading, for me, now is no the way I play music.

MARIA RITA SILVA:  There are many powerful drum solos throughout the history of rock music.  Which is your favorite?  What is a song with a drum solo that you listen to frequently?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:   I don’t know.  The video I mentioned from a drum festival that my drum teacher showed me with Chad Smith, where all the other drummers are doing very technical solos, while Chad Smith just comes and plays the most basic rhythms and would do it for fifteen minutes… I really enjoyed it.

MARIA RITA SILVA:  Speaking of drum teachers, is there one that you would specifically like to recognize as helping you get to where you are now?

ÉLIE CHÉRON: Oh yeah, the teacher that taught me the drums the longest and most efficiently is living in my city and he is a great drummer.  When he was teaching me the drums, he was living in that moment.  Thanks to him, I managed to have drumming lessons that just weren’t rudiments on the snare.  He played in bands, so I was learning from somebody who was playing in bands and it was perfect for me.

Quando me dava aulas, vivia verdadeiramente a música.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  How do you feel about click tracks?  I know some drummers feel they are not natural.  How often and how do you like to use them?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  Click tracks are good for practicing and helping to keep a steady beat.  If you are playing a rhythm and you want to put a fill in it and if you’re not steady and you’re playing two times faster, it’s not cool.  Training yourself with click tracks can be great, but when you play with a click track while playing  in a band, well, that is not good.  You’re not playing with the band; you are playing with a click track.  I think the most important thing is to play with the band, even if there is a change in the tempo.  If you listen to Rage Against the Machine’s first album, you can hear that the tempo is always changing, which makes the music more powerful and when it’s live the click tracks don’t help the musicians play together as a band, because they’re playing with the click tracks and something is lost.

YURI SUNDERMEYER:  I mentioned earlier that I am a young drummer, and I have read that drummers have an octopus brain.  Do you like that expression?  Do you feel that we, drummers, are gifted with more agile brains due to the instrument we play?

ÉLIE CHÉRON::  I don’t think our brains are different, or anything like that.  A guitar player, like Jordan, he can also play drums and he’s a really great drummer.  And I think with the guitar, you have to be in rhythm and you need to be able to do your own thing.  I don’t think there is anything with our brains, it’s just practicing.  Of course, some people learn faster than others, but that’s it.  Everybody in the world can play the guitar or drums, but sometimes it takes more time.  I don’t consider anyone smarter or dumber than anyone else, so everything can be learned.

Élie Chéron's Plan B may still be a work in progress, but here at Coffee Time News, we sincerely hope he never has to put it into action. Instead, we wish him and his HamaSaari bandmates many more years of creating, performing, and sharing great music with audiences everywhere.

MARIA RITA SILVA:   If you ever had to get a “real job”, what would that be?  What is your plan B if you decide to leave world of music?

ÉLIE CHÉRON:  Good question.  My plan A was, as I said, to be a teacher doing research at the university.  I quit, so now it would be difficult to go back there.  Now the plan is… I don’t know.  I haven’t thought about that because I have been living this life for the past four years, but maybe I would teach, but it would be something that would still give me time to play music with my friends.
