A SPECIAL COFFEE TIME NEWS BIRTHDAY UPDATE
As Marc Storace approaches his 75th birthday, Coffee Time News is delighted to catch up with a musician who continues to approach performing with the same energy, gratitude and love of music that have defined his remarkable career.
When we first spoke with Marc, our student journalists had the opportunity to learn about his journey through rock music, from KROKUS to his work with STORACE and the experiences and influences that shaped him along the way. This time, Maria Calado returned with a few new questions as Marc prepares to celebrate this special milestone.
Their conversation looks not only at Marc at 75, but also at the people sharing his musical journey today. Marc talks about guitarist Anna Cara and the energy a younger generation brings to the stage, as well as his daughter Giuliana and her own growing life in music.
For Marc, however, reaching 75 does not appear to be about looking backward. He continues to perform, create and move forward with a sense of gratitude for the musicians around him and the opportunity to keep doing what he loves.
Coffee Time News wishes Marc Storace a very happy 75th birthday, and we are pleased to share this special update to our original interview.

MARIA CALADO: You are approaching your 75th birthday. Does reaching 75 have any particular significance for you? Has it made you reflect differently on your career, your music, or what you still want to accomplish?
MARC STORACE: I actually do not give age too much thought unless I’m feeling pain, which is usually muscular, so I go about doing the same warm-ups and physical exercises I have always done. Of course, I am more aware and feel quite privileged to still be able to perform the way I do today. I carry on thinking positive, with a sense of gratitude and joy and this natural willingness to go on. After all these years, I also retain a high respect for my fellow comrades and excellent musicians who still make it possible for me to get up there and do it!
MARIA CALADO: We couldn't help but notice your bandmate Anna Cara, who brings a great presence to the stage when you perform.
MARC STORACE: Thank you. I will forward your nice compliment to her!
MARIA CALADO: How did she become part of the band?
MARC STORACE: Originally, Anna was discovered via YouTube by Tommy Henriksen, who then recruited her into his band CROSSBONE SKULLY. Tommy, apart from being a “live” pro guitar player and singer, is also a good rock producer and songwriter. Whilst we were working together on my second album, CROSSFIRE, here in Switzerland, Anna played on four tracks: “Rock This City,” “Adrenaline,” “Love Thing Stealer” and “Let’s Get Nuts!”
So, since Tommy is so busy on the road with Alice Cooper and The Hollywood Vampires, and that prevents him from touring with SKULLY, Anna joined STORACE.
Enquanto trabalhávamos juntos no meu segundo álbum, CROSSFIRE, aqui na Suíça, Anna tocou em quatro faixas: “Rock This City”, “Adrenaline”, “Love Thing Stealer” e “Let’s Get Nuts!”

MARIA CALADO: Bringing a talented younger musician into an established group can add a completely different energy. What do you think that younger generation brings to veteran musicians, and what can they learn from you in return?
MARC STORACE: Well, firstly, you must know that, in spite of her young age, Anna is first and foremost a big fan of various famous old-school, blues-influenced rock guitarists! So, one can check out her wide repertoire via YouTube… very impressive and well-played, energetic guitar solos with the right feeling!
So, from that angle, she was immediately a big plus for STORACE. Whilst with us, she broke the ice playing “live” and moving on stage to enthusiastic crowds.
MARIA CALADO: We have also noticed that your daughter is becoming increasingly involved in the music scene and seems to be collaborating with a variety of artists. What is the most important lesson you have passed on to her as she continues to establish herself in the world of music?
MARC STORACE: Ever since she was a little child, Giuliana was always creative, and there was a time when she amazed us all by playing parts from Mozart on the piano without reading the notes! She and I sang a lot together at home… mostly Beatles songs.
From an early age, I took her to band rehearsals and “live” shows, where she became familiar with the musical environment. Then, one day, she participated as a guest singer with ACOUSTICAL-MOUNTAIN, a side project I was doing during longer breaks from my main band, KROKUS. From then on, things started happening for her.

HAPPY 75TH BIRTHDAY, MARC!
With our best wishes from the student journalists and the entire Coffee Time News team.
FELIZ 75.º ANIVERSÁRIO, MARC!

Marc Storace first met Krokus when Krokus opened for TEA during TEA’s farewell tour circa 1977. From 1979 till 1988 Marc toured with Krokus non-stop, sometimes nine months in-a-row, throughout the USA, Canada, Europe and many other parts of the world.

The Headhunter album was Krokus’s biggest seller to date. The metal ballad "Screaming in the Night" opened many doors for Krokus in the USA and the rest of the world. It was produced by Judas Priest`s Tom Allom with whom Marc is still in contact today.

MARIA CALADO: If there is one song from your catalog that you could guarantee would still be listened to a thousand years from now, which song would it be? Which song would you want to be eternal?
MARC STORACE: One of the songs I feel will always be around is our heavy metal love ballad, “Screaming in the Night.” I wrote this masterpiece together with Krokus for our Headhunter album in 1983. The words I sang were inspired by my own life situation at that time, to which I added a lot of fantasy in order to dramatize and romanticize the story. It helped to increase our airplay drastically, and increased record sales put the album at #24 on the US Billboard charts. It was our highest chart position in the USA ever… and with a whole album too!
MARIA CALADO: Can you comment on or give advice about the aging process and maintaining your edge and your voice as a rock musician?
MARC STORACE: I think it basically boils down to maintaining a stable daily physical condition. I developed a technique that allows me to squeeze out loud notes without damaging my vocal cords. I apply this carefully during my afternoon warm-up before every sound check. This technique creates that typical gritty sound in my voice and, when applied with care, reduces the danger of hoarseness during a concert.
I like to stay off milk, cheese and fatty foods for a couple of days before each gig. This prevents mucus from getting in the way of my vocal cords whilst singing. I enjoy a good plate of pasta with a nice tomato sauce three to four hours before a performance. The carbs need that much time to turn into energy, and one should not go on stage with a full belly anyway! It’s vital for me to maintain this discipline in order to be able to bring up the required physical power to push all that air out of my lungs at the right pitch for circa an hour and a half!

MARIA CALADO: I like the song “Ride Into the Sun.” Can you talk about the process behind creating that song? Do you have a single formula for creating songs? Can you talk about that a bit?
MARC STORACE: There is no single formula. For this song, the band prepared some basic tracks, and some lyrics and a rough vocal melody were added on top. Then we took it from there. Sometimes the lyrics and vocal melody come first. It can also be a mixture of both, where a couple of chords inspire a melody, which in turn inspires the next chord or chords… just like playing a game of ping-pong… until the whole song is finished. LOL! The latter happens often when only two creative people work in the same room.
MARIA CALADO: Gosto da música “Ride Into the Sun”.
MARIA CALADO: I notice that you do cover songs. What attracts you to a song and makes you want to cover it? Are you looking to reinvent it or be loyal to its original sound? Which song do you think you do an especially good job of covering?
MARC STORACE: My STORACE solo album, Live and Let Live, contains only 10 songs, and that’s not enough to fill a two-hour concert. So, I added a few older songs from my past career to my present setlist. This means that right now I am “covering” some of my own songs from the bands I sang with in the past, namely: TEA, Krokus, Blue and Eazy Money.
I adapted these songs to suit my present voice and band sound, which is hard rock. That said, I prefer to cover lesser-known songs, or ones that became relatively obscure. This allows me more freedom to apply my own creativity to them. My favourite example is “American Woman,” a song which was a big hit for the band The Guess Who back in the sixties. Krokus recorded it in the ’80s on the album One Vice at a Time. I made it a point not to listen to the original too much—only to pick out the lyrics, and that was enough. The rest came out of me whilst jamming it out with the band… whilst still fresh in the studio.

MARIA CALADO: I like your song “Broken Wings.” It lists other people besides you as the composers. At what point did you get involved in creating that song? Do you have any other comments you might want to offer regarding “Broken Wings”?
MARC STORACE: I wrote “Broken Wings” together with Cyrill Camenzind (guitarist) and Massimo Buonanno (drummer). I had felt very comfortable working with the guys on a popular Swiss TV production for 3+ called Sing Mein Song almost a year earlier, so when the dreaded Covid lockdowns made everyone’s lives difficult, and my main band, Krokus, even called it a day, I decided I wasn’t going to just sit around moping. So, I called them up and we started writing the first few songs for my first official solo album!
They worked as session musicians in the Powerplay Studios near Zürich, so we also recorded the album there using old-school equipment like a Neve Desk and a Studer Tape Machine! It was an unforgettable, smooth-running experience.
In my lyrics for “Broken Wings,” I sing about the passing of time and the changes it brings whilst growing older. It’s about appreciating the fresh energy of the young while moving forward with your own life and all the memories you carry within yourself. It’s about staying determined and achieving new goals in spite of the drawbacks and heartbreaks one might have gone through.

MARIA CALADO: Are there other styles of music you enjoy singing besides rock? Which artist or style of music do you like that might surprise other people?
MARC STORACE: I still do like some progressive music, and I love soul and blues too. Bands like Yes and Genesis wrote some incredible stuff in their ’70s heydays, and I loved listening to soul singers like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding back in the sixties.

MARIA CALADO: Who inspired you at the beginning of your career, and who inspires you now? On the other hand, who have you met who has said that you inspired them?
MARC STORACE: Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and The Who were amongst my biggest inspirations for hard rock. My friend and producer Tommy Henriksen, guitar player with Alice Cooper & the Hollywood Vampires, told me I was a big inspiration to him when he was first starting out… and even bands out of the USA like Mötley Crüe and Poison told us they were influenced by Krokus.

MARIA CALADO: Some famous musicians from your era have already passed away. I heard in one of your live recordings that you honored the lead singer of Motörhead. Is there someone in particular you would like to mention who is no longer with us… someone who had a particularly strong impact on you?
MARC STORACE: One of those persons is John Lennon. He was the deepest and most outspoken of The Beatles. He went through extreme ups and downs in life but became pretty balanced and wrote some great solo stuff before his untimely death.
MARC STORACE: Uma dessas pessoas é John Lennon.

MARIA CALADO: There are two quotes from rockers I would like to share with you and see how you feel about what they said. First, Captain Beefheart said, “Most of modern rock and roll is a product of guilt.” Do you agree? Second, Steve Winwood said, “I think a lot of people come into rock and roll to try to change the world. I came into rock ’n’ roll to make music.”
MARC STORACE: The first comment makes no sense to me at all, but I believe the last part of Stevie’s comment relates to most of us musicians. I personally joined rock ’n’ roll for the love of music first, too. Of course, one cannot steer completely away from current events and personal opinions, so one tends to drop a political or otherwise critical comment here and there to put more colour and spice in the repertoire. Some songs like Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance” or “Imagine” I find to be still relevant today.
MARIA CALADO: What do you think of today’s music? Is there a young artist you would like to meet or do a duet with?
MARC STORACE: I basically still listen to old-school-influenced music because most of the new music today doesn’t touch my heart. I love Beth Hart, but a touching duet with Tina Turner would still be up my street!

MARIA CALADO: When you decided to become a professional musician, did your family support this decision? Was there anyone in your family who was upset that you chose to become a musician?
MARC STORACE: My dad paid my first airfare to London. I was free to go! None of my family was ever against the road I chose. They all wished me good luck, and still do today.
MARIA CALADO: I am in the conservatory here in Portugal. What is your opinion on formal education? Is being part of a conservatory a good way to start a professional career? How much does it really help you?
MARC STORACE: Formal education is cool, but a good portion of street savvy helps your creativity and adjusts your personality and attitude, because you’re dealing with real everyday things. Mozart was one of the first rock ’n’ rollers in music history. His later works paid his bills although, in my opinion, not his best, but funny and therefore popular. There’s a saying that goes: “A jazz musician plays a thousand chords for three people, whilst a rock musician plays three chords for a thousand people.” Get what I mean?
