COFFEE TIME NEWS STUDENT JOURNALIST
NAME: Yuri Sundermeyer
START DATE / END DATE: June 2023 - PRESENT
YURI'S HIGHLIGHTS:
Yuri has grown up alongside Coffee Time News, developing from one of our youngest student journalists into an experienced interviewer who has participated in conversations with accomplished musicians from around the world. His strong command of English allows him to communicate naturally with our international guests, while his curiosity and outgoing personality have helped him form genuine connections with many of the artists he has interviewed.
Music, and particularly drumming, has become an increasingly important part of Yuri's journey. Through Coffee Time News, he has had opportunities not only to interview professional drummers, but also to learn from them. At JazzAscona in Switzerland, he interviewed Bennett Ireland and received an impromptu drum lesson, while his relationship with Paul Garisto developed from an interview into regular drum lessons. Encounters with musicians including Adonis Rose and Andrew D. McNeill have also influenced the way Yuri thinks about music and his own development as a drummer.
Yuri has also represented Coffee Time News internationally, meeting and interviewing musicians at jazz festivals in Switzerland and Italy. What began as an opportunity to practice English with interesting people has developed into something much more meaningful: a way for him to explore music, discover other cultures and build relationships with people whose experiences continue to influence him long after the interviews are over.

YURI'S FAVORITES / INTERESTS:
Yuri's greatest passion is drumming, an interest that has grown alongside his work with Coffee Time News. He enjoys discovering different styles of music and learning directly from experienced musicians, whether through an interview, a conversation backstage or one of his regular drum lessons.
His strong command of English and interest in the United States and other cultures have also made international interviews especially rewarding for him. Yuri enjoys meeting people from different backgrounds, hearing their stories and maintaining the friendships and connections that sometimes continue long after an interview has ended.

Yuri participated in an interview with Keith Lowe that became both an educational and entertaining conversation. Hearing about Keith's life in music gave Yuri and his fellow student journalists another opportunity to learn directly from an experienced musician.

Adonis Rose has not only been a great interview guest for Yuri and his fellow student journalists, but has also influenced the way Yuri thinks about music, cultural awareness and the importance of appreciating other people and their experiences.

While in Ascona, Yuri met Sky Cries Mary's Bennett Ireland for an exclusive interview and even received an impromptu drum lesson from him. During the interview, Yuri wore a Forlorn shirt signed by Tom Bates, making it a day filled with great conversations, new friendships and, of course, plenty of drumming.

Yuri and Constança promote their Andrew D. McNeill interview. Andrew is another drummer who has encouraged Yuri's growing passion for the instrument and his desire to continue developing as a musician.

Yuri proudly wears the Psychedelic Furs concert shirt given to him by Paul Garisto in appreciation of his hard work on Paul's interview. The two formed such a strong connection through Coffee Time News that Yuri now studies drums with Paul.

Meeting members of the LSU Brass Band gave Yuri a new perspective on music and influenced the way he thinks about his own future as a musician. He was eager to share their message and enthusiasm with our readers.

Yuri met Vanessa Collier and Andrew D. McNeill at JazzAscona in Switzerland, where he learned about the strong bonds musicians form and how touring and performing together can create lasting friendships.
